frosted heather

The dawn of a sparkly New Year

Vertical panorama of trees in flogShort Meadow welcomed 2017 with a  light dusting of snow and thick decorative fog. The heather mounds are at their most beautiful when the small blossoms glow through snow and frost.  As the sun burned off the fog, melting snow and frost turned into brilliant jewels on the old, dead grass in the pasture – one more reason not to mow it too close.

At the edge of the wood, the narcissus and daffodils are poking their noses out of the earth. Perhaps headed for a rude awakening if it turns hard cold but a welcome sight just the same. Freshly and shallowly planted between thick roots, they’re an omen of a bounty to come in just a few short months.

The seed catalogues have also begun arriving in the mail to the tune of three or four a day for the last couple of weeks. Now there’s a nice stack waiting by the fireplace for just the right moment to sit down and dream of the year ahead.

Wherever you are and no matter the size of your garden, have a happy and joyous New Year!
